Shu-Yi Lin is a Principal Investigator at NHRI, Taiwan. She completed her graduate program in the Department of Chemistry at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). Afterward, she spent 6 years conducting post-doctoral research at NTHU and National Taiwan University (NTU). Her research fields included surface chemistry of condensed phases, physical chemistry, nanotechnology, organic synthesis and analytical chemistry. She developed a novel platinum-based nanodrug with a “tumor-site activation” mechanism for anti-cancer therapy (Advanced Materials, 2013), which has already obtained patent approvals by worldwide. In July 2016, the technology was transferred to domestic pharmaceutical companies and given the brand name TargeplatinTM. After the technology transfer, an industry-university program was initiated with pharmaceutical companies, with the intention to apply for a drug permit (IND) recently. The technology transfer project was guided by herself from basic research and development to the conversion of the results. For this achievement, she won the 2017 Taipei Biotech Technology Transfer Special Mention Award. She developed gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) to provide oxygen for improving the effect of photodynamic therapy (Small). The nanomaterials were pushed from innovative research and development to conversion, and much cooperative work, including collaboration with colleagues from other institutes, is currently being implemented. She also found that AuNCs can modify the self-assembly of endotoxin, modulating intense immune responses for the applications of vaccine adjuvants and anti-sepsis development (Nano Letters, 2015/2018). Due to her effort in transitional nanomedicine, she won twice Taiwan Innovation Award, the 14th Y. Z. Hsu Science Award in 2016, Taipei Biotech Technology Transfer Special Mention Award in 2017, Outstanding Research Award of MOST (Ministry of science and technology) in 2017.
